Fashionably Cool

Today, some short text sharing my current understanding about living presently in life as one who practices meditation.

When we first try meditation or relaxation techniques, there can sometimes be a transition of detaching the self from one's surroundings and 'holing up' inside one's own being.  This can be useful for finding a footing to understand ourselves and sometimes for the first time we glimpse our true nature.

At some time, it is also important to go beyond just what is self and embrace the world surrounding us.  After all, we are part of the phenomena we come into contact with, as much as it is a part of us.  It can be useful though to keep that sense of self we found during meditation.  Fashions can come and go almost daily and if we find ourselves caught up in them it is even more important to have a strong sense of self.
By acknowledging our own 'uniqueness', we can more fully appreciate the 'uniqueness' in others.  With the end of the Olympic Games in London and soon the beginning of the Paralympic Games, there are many examples of people who have managed to keep their heads under adversity, against what people have said is possible and whatever else could pull them from their goals.  In a few months, most people will have forgotten the Games and either be focused on Rio, or whatever new fashion is pumped into the mainstream.

During meditation we are training ourselves to accept the obstacles that arise and just stay focused on the object of the meditation.  Similarly, we can accept whatever fashions come our way, whatever seems to be the flavour of the month.  Keeping a sense of self but at the same time enjoying the experiences that come with the latest fashions.  Many individuals from different countries have taken part in the Olympic Games in London but they are all still Nationals of their own countries.  Similarly, you could try to experience the world around you fully, but keep your own identity.

Land Of Smiles

Thailand is affectionately referred to as 'The Land Of Smiles'.  anyone who has been here will know this for themselves.  Even though people are people, everywhere in the world, it does seem that the Thais have smiling deeply ingrained into their psyche.

Many of us who don't live in Thailand could learn something from this way of living.  In many parts of the world 'laughter yoga' has taken off.  To begin with it can seem quite contrived, and 'odd'.  Even watching a class can look a little unsettling.  If you have taken part in a laughter yoga class, however, you have probably experienced the benefits.  You just can't hold on to your negative emotions while laughing, especially in a group.

Most of us may not have the resources to go to Thailand or Laughing Yoga, so how do we get the benefits?

One of the best ways is to start today with a smile.  Even now, while you read this just try to smile.  You can start smiling at yourself to begin with, when you wake up every morning and look at yourself in the mirror, give yourself a big smile.  Then if you feel brave, smile at the people closest to you.  If you feel REALLY brave try to smile at a stranger.  The most important thing is to make the smile as genuine as you can.  So it might be a bit contrived for a while, but it will become more natural.  Notice how other people react to it.  That guy that used to scowl at you from the other end of the bus each morning may soon greet you with a smile (which is much more pleasant).

Smiling is pretty powerful stuff, try it out, and if you notice any significant difference in your life, post a comment and let us know.

First Up

As well as the Kaizen Fitness Blog, I will try to write more here about matters of a more holistic nature or which concern organic issues.

I hope that you enjoy and remember, if you also are interested in supporting Ban Prayanak, your donations are always gratefully accepted.

I will hopefully write some articles regarding permaculture and organic farming, building with respect for nature, as well as yoga and meditation themes.
