Land Of Smiles

Thailand is affectionately referred to as 'The Land Of Smiles'.  anyone who has been here will know this for themselves.  Even though people are people, everywhere in the world, it does seem that the Thais have smiling deeply ingrained into their psyche.

Many of us who don't live in Thailand could learn something from this way of living.  In many parts of the world 'laughter yoga' has taken off.  To begin with it can seem quite contrived, and 'odd'.  Even watching a class can look a little unsettling.  If you have taken part in a laughter yoga class, however, you have probably experienced the benefits.  You just can't hold on to your negative emotions while laughing, especially in a group.

Most of us may not have the resources to go to Thailand or Laughing Yoga, so how do we get the benefits?

One of the best ways is to start today with a smile.  Even now, while you read this just try to smile.  You can start smiling at yourself to begin with, when you wake up every morning and look at yourself in the mirror, give yourself a big smile.  Then if you feel brave, smile at the people closest to you.  If you feel REALLY brave try to smile at a stranger.  The most important thing is to make the smile as genuine as you can.  So it might be a bit contrived for a while, but it will become more natural.  Notice how other people react to it.  That guy that used to scowl at you from the other end of the bus each morning may soon greet you with a smile (which is much more pleasant).

Smiling is pretty powerful stuff, try it out, and if you notice any significant difference in your life, post a comment and let us know.

Sawadee!
